Ulu (OO-loo)

Even from lava rock, life finds a way to ulu.

Literal meaning: to grow; to sprout; to increase

Cultural meaning:
In Hawaiian, ulu describes the act of growing or expanding — whether it is plants rising from the soil, communities becoming stronger, or knowledge spreading from one generation to the next.

The word is also connected to ʻulu (breadfruit), an important traditional crop that has long provided nourishment for Hawaiian communities. Because of this connection, ulu carries associations of abundance, sustainability, and the continued flourishing of life.

More broadly, the concept reminds us that growth happens gradually when life is nurtured and given the right conditions.
