PunaCAN
Growing a More Resilient Puna, Together.
PunaCAN is the nonprofit partner of ʻĀina Iki Ranch
Our name reflects both where we call home and what we believe is possible.
Puna represents the vibrant communities, people, and landscapes of Hawaiʻi Island's Puna district.
CAN stands for Community Action Network because lasting change happens when neighbors, organizations, educators, farmers, volunteers, and local businesses come together with a shared purpose.
Guided by aloha ʻāina, PunaCAN exists to strengthen food resilience, promote compassionate stewardship of the land, and create opportunities for people to reconnect—with nature, with practical knowledge, and with one another.
While much of this work comes to life each day at ʻĀina Iki Ranch, PunaCAN provides the charitable foundation that helps grow these efforts beyond our fence lines and into the community we love.
Our Kuleana
-
PunaCAN works to strengthen health, food security, and collective resilience by helping individuals reconnect with traditional food cultivation practices, responsible stewardship of the ʻāina, and one another.
Rooted in the Puna district and guided by aloha ʻāina, we connect people, knowledge, and resources to create lasting pathways toward healthier communities and a more resilient local food system.
-
PunaCAN and ʻĀina Iki Ranch work hand in hand.
ʻĀina Iki Ranch is a regenerative sanctuary and working farm where rescued animals receive lifelong care, regenerative agriculture is practiced, and educational opportunities are created through everyday life on the land.
PunaCAN exists to support and expand this work through charitable giving, grants, educational programming, community partnerships, volunteer opportunities, and future initiatives that benefit both people and the places they call home.
Together, we believe that healthy land, healthy animals, and healthy communities are deeply connected.
-
Community
Strong communities grow through connection, generosity, and shared purpose. We believe meaningful change happens when people come together to support one another.
Action
Compassion is most powerful when it becomes action. Every seed planted, every animal cared for, every lesson shared, and every helping hand contributes to something larger than ourselves.
Stewardship
We honor our responsibility to care for the ʻāina, the animals entrusted to us, and the knowledge we pass to future generations. Stewardship means leaving our community healthier than we found it.
Abundance
Nature teaches us that abundance grows when it is nurtured and shared. We strive to cultivate healthy ecosystems, nourishing food, resilient communities, and opportunities for everyone to thrive.
Wellness
The well-being of people, animals, and the environment are inseparable. By caring for each, we strengthen them all.
Strong communities grow through connection, generosity, and shared purpose. We believe meaningful change happens when people come together to support one another.
-
Everything we do is rooted in three simple principles:
Love — We lead with compassion, kindness, and respect for all living beings.
Creativity — We embrace curiosity, innovation, and resourcefulness as we discover new ways to serve our community.
Fun — Joy has a place in meaningful work. We celebrate the personalities of our animals, the beauty of the land, and the relationships that make this journey worthwhile.
-
PunaCAN is just beginning its journey.
Today, much of our work is happening behind the scenes as we build partnerships, establish programs, and create the foundation for long-term community impact.
As we grow, we envision opportunities that empower individuals and families with practical skills, strengthen local food systems, and create meaningful ways for our community to learn, connect, and thrive together.
While these initiatives are still taking shape, they represent the direction we're working toward—and we invite you to grow alongside us.

Looking Ahead
We believe meaningful change happens one relationship at a time.
One rescued animal.
One garden.
One workshop.
One volunteer.
One shared meal.
One neighbor helping another.
Together, these small acts of care create healthier communities, stronger local food systems, and a future where both people and the ʻāina can flourish.
